Oh well. I made one less correct prediction than last year, comparatively. This year I predicted 13 of the 19 biggest categories (14 of the complete 23 and 6 of the big 8) Here are last year's results. I did do well when it comes to seeing the rankings I gave the nominees. None of the picks I pegged as having no chance won, though two of my picks for having little no chance ended up winning. Chances to tie last year's correct predictions were extremely close, however, if you believe me when I say that I had Gladiator and The Perfect Storm in an exact tie for Visual Effects. I should have gone with Gladiator's momentum. Shoulda, woulda, coulda! 3/26/2001 11:30:49 PM .:. | Discuss

Whew! Just got back an hour ago after a five hour drive back home from L.A. I stayed with David and hung out with the dlevy posse for most of the weekend. David, Stephen Rebello (Bad Movies We Love, Movieline Magazine, etc.) and I met for quite a while Saturday night brainstorming and getting quite a bit of work done on a major project on the front burner coming your way, quite possibly, very shortly. Theatre geeks take note!

In other theatre geek news, I met David Byrd this afternoon. David created posters for Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, the Who, Traffic, Iron Butterfly, Ravi Shankar, the Grateful Dead and the 1969 Rolling Stones tour. As a Broadway and movie poster designer in the 1970s, he created posters for "Follies," "Godspell," "Jesus Christ Superstar," "House of Blue Leaves," "The Magic Show," "Little Shop of Horrors," and more than 100 other shows. In the 1980s, he created posters for the Mark Taper Forum, the Ahmanson Theatre, the Doolittle Theatre and the Pasadena Playhouse, among others. He also has been a regular contributor as a cover artist for TV Guide. Since 1991, he has been a senior illustrator at Warner Brothers.

Byrd Designs

We talked about the projects I've been working on and his involvement in the graphic design/theatre world. Word on the street is a Byrd/Bakalor collaboration may very well be in order. Hmmm...

I also got to meet and hang out with Dan Teebor, Marc Melocchi and Jeremy Sunderland from Sondheim.com. Dan and Marc both gave me private backlot tours of their respected studios. I got to mosey around the backlots of Universal and Warner Brothers from the comfort of electric golfcarts. Woo hoo!

I'll talk about the Oscars and results of my predictions soon. I didn't do as well as I had in other years but that's the fun of it all. Until then, I leave you with the following soon to be infamous quote:

What follows are my final ranked Oscar winner predictions.

All #1's, in green, are my prediction for who will win the award on Oscar night. Nominees in blue are possible spoilers, ranked according to my statistical calculations, from most possible win to least. Nominees in orange have statistically little to no chance of winning. Nominees in red are my picks for those who should now be comfortable with the phrase, "It was an honor just to be nominated."

Since this is a revision of my earlier winning predictions, I've added a + or minus number next to many of the nominees. These show which predictions changed and by how much.

My predictions, as always, are for those I believe will win and do not neccesarily reflect who I feel should win. With that said...

In addition, why is it that, though I was pretty darn good at them, I didn't look forward (most of the time) to getting an assignment to write a 2,300 word essay on anything but now love doing so? :-)

DinahSanders (9:54:27 PM): Pleasure-reading isn't defined by the subject so much as it is by the lack of pressure.

Szns Of Hype (9:54:40 PM): Exactly!

DinahSanders (9:54:41 PM): Same goes for pleasure-writing, I suppose.

Pill #1: Success!

That was 1000% times easier than I thought it would be! 3/8/2001 02:48:43 PM .:. | Discuss

Just got back from the trek for new antibiotics. Instead of needing to take yesterday's medication three times a day I only have to take today's twice a day. The size of the pill is slightly smaller than yesterday's weighing in at about the size of Iowa.

Why am I telling you all of this? :) 3/8/2001 02:34:48 PM .:. | Discuss

Well, it took over an hour to get hold of the doctor who prescribed me the antibiotic yesterday afternoon. While I was waiting I called my pharmacy and my regular physician. The doctor's office has yet to call back but the pharmacist did and said that the antibiotic I was prescribed has a 10-15% chance of reacting to my penicillin allergy. Finally the doctor who prescribed the medication yesterday called me back to tell me it has a 2-3% chance and that if I wanted to I could come back to her office this afternoon to get a different antibiotic that would not react at all. I told her I would do so. And I will. And that's that! 3/8/2001 11:01:23 AM .:. | Discuss

...and to the person who goes by the name of "Geoff" at odedodea.edu who sent me the following comment form:

"I'm a psychic. I will soon do terrible damage to this finger (well, I was close)"

I bite my thumb at you! ;-) 3/7/2001 11:54:30 PM .:. | Discuss

I give today one thumb down. Way down.

Slowly fade in to my intention of taking my prescribed antibiotics at lunch today. I opened the cap, removed the annoying concoction of low quality cotton, (annoying when you're right handed and the thumb on your right hand has four stitches in it) and saw a pill the size of Montana. Well, more like Colorado. Size of these United States aside, it was a much bigger pill than I was used to.

For one reason or another, as you well know being the long time reader you are, I wasn't "able" to swallow pills until several years ago (Let's hear it for pink, gritty, chalk-like chewable Tylenol!) and even since then I've really only taken Advil and other relatively tiny pills. To make, what I've already drawn out as, a long story short this was one honkin pill that I wasn't quite sure I'd be able to take. It was for this reason alone that I decided to postpone the taking of said pill until the evening.

Cut to evening: I was speaking with my brother, who has much more medical training than I, about the pain I was feeling in my arm. I innocently asked him if I needed to take my antibiotic on a full or empty stomach (Is that anything like standing on one's hands? Never mind!) He consulted a medical book (journal? text...?) and began reading to me all of the related information about the drug. He finally got to the section that reads:

"Cautions: IF YOU HAVE HAD A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION to a cephalosporin antibiotic... or a penicillin antibiotic... contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately BEFORE TAKING THIS MEDICINE.

Now, when I was a baby, it was found out that I do, in fact, have a severe allergic reaction to penicillin. I tell this to every doctor I see and in fact told them several times today. Even so, apparently, they decided to prescribe this medication to me. Do they think I deserve a vacation and thought an extended getaway in the hospital would do me good?

Cut to me, tomorrow, calling Blue Shield, my physician, and the Chuck E Cheese nurse and doctor who gave me the faulty medication in the first place.

Ya know, many maids and cleaners explain to their customers that they "don't do windows." I think, from now on, I will explain to any full time or freelance employer that I "don't do business cards." They're simply not good for my health! :)

Fade to black.

Cut (But be careful with the any sharp instruments).

Print.

That's a wrap. 3/7/2001 11:51:40 PM .:. | Discuss

Ouch.

To make matters worse, my upper right arm is in pain from the tetanus shot I got Monday night. The nurse today, come to think of it, the very one who seemed to have graduated from the University of Chuck E Cheese Medical University, so I guess I should take her advice with a grain of salt) said this was normal and I shouldn't worry about it.

If my arm falls off we'll all know why. 3/7/2001 02:11:45 PM .:. | Discuss

So I went to my doctor this morning as I set up an appointment with him yesterday to take a look at my thumb and set an appointment in another week to get the stitches taken out. I arrive at the doctor's office at 9:15 for a 9:30 appointment. At 9:35 I am called and within a minute of my explaining the situation I am told they cannot see me as the injury happened at work (which I explained on the phone the day before when I set the appointment to begin with). They sent me to another office 20 minutes away which I went to immediately following this news.

At 10:01 I signed in at the second doctor's office and explained the situation to a very nice woman at the front desk. I filled out several forms and documents and took a seat. About fifteen minutes later I am told that they were unable to reach my employer and would have to wait until they received a call back from him before I could be seen. I then proceeded to call many people at work to see if I could get hold of him. About 20 minutes later they seemed to have gotten the information they needed and told me to have a seat and wait for the doctor to see me.

At around 11:15 I was seen by a nurse who took a look at my thumb and took down the medications I was taking, allergies, she took my blood pressure and pulse, etc. While she was doing this she managed to spell nearly every medical word incorrectly... I think I know more about medicine than she does but that's another story. Nevermind.

Anyway, she then went to tell the doctor about my situation and the doctor came in to see me after a while. She took a look at my thumb, said she wanted me to take some antibiotics and come back 10 days after the stitches went in to have them removed. Mind you, I already knew about the 10 days for stitch removal. It took her 30 seconds to prescribe the antibiotics, another 15 minutes to have the prescription filled on site, and another 15 to schedule my followup stitch removal appointment for next week. From the doctor's office I went into work and arrived at noon - three hours after I first began my trek.

Damn paper cutters. 3/7/2001 12:23:49 PM .:. | Discuss

Tuesday, March 06, 2001

So, last night I went to the emergency room to have my cut looked at. Everyone who saw said cut thereafter looked at me as if I was insane to have waited so long to come in and have it looked at. Like it was my fault that the paper cutter jumped in the way of my thumb. Sheesh.

As you know if you've read this with any regularity, my history with a severe dislike of needles and anything even slightly gory is well documented. In the past several months, however, I seem to have "grown up" in many cases getting blood work done multiple times, and now actually going to the emergency room to get my thumb sewed up.

Luckily (?) there was the cutest little 4 or 5 year old girl, scared and curious as can be in the room directly next to the one they put me in. She said many times to her mother, after having snuck what she thought were inconspicuous looks at me and my trauma, that "The man in that room is very sick. Come look, mom!" After a few times she realized she was quite conspicuous and we would smile at each other. She seemed to only be able to take smiling at me for a split second before she would blush and retreat back to the safety of her hospital bed. I'm not exactly sure why she was being seen but it had to do with needing to be x-rayed and she clearly was concerned about that.

Because she was around I knew it was now my responsibility to see to it that she wasn't any more scared than she already was. So when they stuck a huge needle into my thumb to numb the area before stitching it up, instead of screaming bloody murder at the sever stinging and pain sensations I was feeling, all I could do was smile at the cute little four year old standing by.

I highly suggest bringing random cute little kids with you when getting emergency treatment. In the end it makes the experience slightly less traumatic.

I was stitched up and got a tetanus shot, filled out about 30 pieces of paper, signed and initialed at least as many forms, and was sent on my way all stitched and bandaged up. Every time I've had dental work and the numbing that comes along with said work, it's always lasted for several hours following. I assumed my thumb would stay numb at least as long. That is until about 15 minutes later on the drive home when I began to feel some pain in the area.

Cut to (no pun intended) an hour later when I was in more pain that I imagined could be possible coming out of the area of ones thumb. There was so much pain that I couldn't even seem to fall asleep, even after popping three advil and my other medication which is also supposed to help me fall asleep in the first place. I tried watching some Tivo to get my mind off of the pain but that proved near useless. My thumb was throbbing and the bandages felt much too tight as if my circulation was soon going to be cut off. Many times I thought to myself that I needed to quickly unbandage the thumb or at least get to a doctors immediately to make sure I wasn't in more trouble if it was wrapped too tight. Before I was able to convince myself that this was necessary, somehow, I fell asleep.

When I woke up at around 11:30 in the morning the throbbing pain was gone. It still hurts quite a bit but it's at least manageable. Less manageable was figuring out how to bathe and dress without getting the thumb wet or damaged even more than it had been already. Needless to say, I'm back at work now. Though, I won't be cutting business cards for a while.

So, how was your day? 3/6/2001 02:18:28 PM .:. | Discuss

Yikes! I just got home and see that a "great fan" of mine caught an error in my predictions. It seems I inadvertantly predicted River Pheonix was in fourth place as opposed to Joaquin Phoenix. While River was a fine actor I feel it is my easiest prediction to state definitively that he has zero chance of winning any Oscar this year, or any other year for that matter, though he was nominated in 1989! As well, while I thank Jaime for letting me know about my typo, what I thank the "devoted Bakalor fan" the most for was letting me know that I had any fans in the first place. Lately I've been thinking perhaps I'm the only one reading this thing! - save for the few people who I know read it in the first place. So, thanks, Jaime, for that! :) 3/4/2001 12:07:50 AM .:. | Discuss
